Throughout the month of June, all I made were small studies on paper. My work is changing and thus taking longer to get compositions down. After endless studies for this particular subject, I think I've finally made a study that can be a starting point for a larger canvas:

“My works are about emotional damage” – Catherine Tafur

Maybe it is the strange distant echo of Hieronymous Bosch, visions of large complex scenes, multiple layers of individual characters, groups and iconic elements. Alien monsters are emerging from the Last Day of Judgment. It is a twisted, grotesque Apocalypse. Pure fear, horror and rage are seen through the eyes of an immigrant girl growing up in New York’s hostile, humiliating and rapist habitat. We are given more than a handful of hidden clues of the inconceivable reality of sexual abuse, pain and suffering.

Here, the American Dream turns into a terrifying alien monster, sort of the Eighth Passenger, eating you from both the inside and out.

Catherine Tafur is painting images from a very deep, personal, hellish context. Sometimes she is a young girl standing aside, looking with fear and astonishment at her mythical, subconscious, monstrous surroundings.

Tafur meets her inner visions and fears frontally. She looks directly into her “Heart of Darkness” and shutters the basic, fundamental illusion called the American Dream, at least that of the young shocked girl.

Baseball players, open-mouthed dead sharks, open vaginas – everything is torn up and bleeding. Sadly, there is no escape and Salvation is not in sight. But surprisingly there is no despair there, only rage and restrained anger.

Her images are strong and contemporary. They are a unique mix of avant-garde, horror and science fiction, with both North and South American iconography: Yankees on one hand, Incas on the other. It is a powerful, mythical presentation of a human, especially feminine, struggle for normal existence as seen through the eyes of a very personal, deep experience, growing up within the horrifying urban alien matrix.

I am changing the title of this piece from "The Execution of a Fish" to "The Last Fish." This is not only because it brings to mind the Last Judgement and the Last Supper, but also because I don't know if the fish is being killed or if it's just dying on its own anyway.

I've been invited to paint this box which holds a special edition of Irreversible, an international art magazine. A spread of my artwork will also be included in the publication. It's a large format magazine, so the box is 13x18 inches. The front panels open outwards to reveal the magazines inside.

I wasn't sure what to do compositionally with the opening making a line right down the middle of an already long plane. So I decided it would cut a baby in half.

Goodbye Gowanus, Hello SoHo

Could the last few weeks have been any busier? I have a show up at Irreversible Art Space in Miami, I moved my studio from industrial Gowanus in Brooklyn to fancy uppity SoHo in Manhattan, and it looks like I will be included in an international art magazine come December. (More info on that to come.) I'm starting to get settled into my SoHo studio, and just stretched what is to be my biggest painting yet - almost 7 feet square. This is the first study for it:

Almost everything is going to change on this. Mostly I just wanted to get a general composition down. There will be more studies for all the figures. I'm pretty sure very few of them will stay completely human.

I always feel sorry for people that live in a cage and don't know it. Then it occurred to me that maybe I do too, and maybe art isn't outside of any system and that I'm not free, just in a different cage. So I made this rabid raccoon with chicken hands in acrylic and collage on paper. Then I put it on duct-taped stretchers with wire over the whole thing. Looking at art is like looking at animals in the zoo. The Dionysian caged even in art. I think this is a study for something more complex coming. Or maybe not, who knows.

Strangely, this one didn't require as many layers as usual. Many of these brushstrokes are the first ones I put down. I decided to limit my palette on this one to focus on dramatic lighting that amplifies the impact of the subject/form.

Allison Berkoy, In the Belly of the Lightship

I don't usually say or write much about other contemporary artists. But this particular one really blew me away. Allison Berkoy's video installations at Fountain Art Fair left my jaw hanging open. The site for her work was an old formerly sunken ship docked at pier 66. The ship provided the perfect setting for her eerie installations. Figural sculptures come into being with faces of projected video onto gauze. In one room there is a full grown man with a white masked face sitting in an armchair, talking to a little girl with projected video-face. There is giggling in the background. You don't want to believe what the scene is and what is happening between the man and girl, and it's disturbing as hell. Perhaps it was just the right combination of artist with site. The ship is creepy enough by itself, and it puts you on edge as soon as descend into it. It feels like you may see a ghost at any turn, and basically you do - through Berkoy's work. Everyone I spoke to had the same visceral reaction as me. She is certainly an artist to keep an eye on. This was one of the most memorable and powerful art experiences I've had in NYC.

Sometimes I am so grossed out by my drawings. Sometimes I hate the things that I draw. I truly am disgusted by it. As soon as it enters my head I think Goddamnit! and I don't want to draw it but then there's the stupid "need" feeling and I make the drawing and I can't even look at it. Ew. And I wish I would at least use a non-realist technique so that I could put some amount of distance there but no, there it is. A ridiculous flaccid pig-dick. I hate this drawing. It's pathetic and absurd. I haven't made penises since I was like 19. I hope this phase doesn't last. I hate it I hate it I hate it. I want to make colorful brushstrokes again.

I am also almost finished with this one:

This one was originally titled We Are All Going to Die One Day, but it has gone to other places since, and I need to re-title it.

I also started a little sculpture. It's in it's very beginning stages. It's 9 x 10 x 5 inches so far, but will most likely get bigger and bigger.

No titled are coming to me yet. It's too early. I'm thinking this will involve a baptismal font (again!) but nothing's for sure.

Let's see if this one goes anywhere. The image is from a pic of a baby deformed from depleted uranium. Why is it that paintings appear soooo different online? I realize they can never be properly reproduced, but the difference seems so extreme to me. Anyway, so far I am very happy with the way this one is coming along.

I am just getting over a flu, so I find that I still don't quite have the mental power/focus for painting, but here's a print. It's a reincarnation of a drawing I did before, so it was all just the craft of making it.

I am renaming this one Bitch. I love the first layers of paint. Yes, there are obvious references to Goya and Bacon. Not sure how I feel about that.

Lighting and installing Angel

So this is Angel. I am trying to figure out the lighting/installation of it. I'm not quite finished with the construction of it. But I have to figure this part out in order to see how much weight I may need to add where. I was thinking of lighting from below. The hallway light seemed nice though. It wasn't my intention for the white cross on the wall to be apart of it. That was for a different piece and I just didn't paint over it yet. It will be gone.
